To do a satisfactory examination, you must have a thoroughly cleansed colon. The best results have been obtained by following these instructions:

IMPORTANT - 1 WEEK PRIOR TO PROCEDURE:

1. Do not take any of these medications: iron or Coumadin (blood thinners).
2. Please avoid any foods containing seeds, such as popcorn, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, etc.
3. Continue to take all other prescribed medications as usual. 
4. Pick up your Osmoprep/Tablet Prep from your pharmacy total of 32 Tablets.
5. If you have any tendency to be constipated, please begin a clear liquid diet two days prior to the exam.

DAY BEFORE THE EXAM

1. If you are on Donnatol, Levsin, Robinul, Lotronex, Levbid, Bentyl, Imodium, Lomotil or Librax you should stop these medications while preparing for your colonoscopy.
2. All Day: Clear liquid diet only, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This includes water, clear juices, bouillon, plain Jell-O, Gatorade, soda pop, coffee, and tea or any other liquid you can see through. Please avoid excess red or purple juices because they stain the colon. For effectiveness, you are required to drink large amounts of clear liquids(water, ginger-ale, sprite, Gatorade, apple juice) at least 8 ounces, with each dose (4 tablets) of the Osmoprep.
3. NO solid foods, milk or milk products, or juice with pulp.
4. At 5:00 p.m. take 4 Osmoprep tablets (with 8 ounces of any clear fluid) every 15 minutes for a total of 20 tablets which will take 1 hour. First dose 5:00 p.m., Second dose 5:15 p.m., Third dose 5:30 p.m., Fourth dose 5:45 p.m., Final dose 6:00 p.m. Remember to drink 8 ounces of clear fluid with every 4 tablets taken.

DAY OF EXAM

1. Do not take high blood pressure medication or diuretics (water pills) the day of your procedure.
2. 4 hours prior to your exam take 4 Osmoprep Tablets with 8 ounces of clear liquid; continue this every 15 min, for a total of 3 doses (12 Tablets) which will take a total of 30 minutes. Remember to drink 8 ounces of clear fluid with each dose.
3. The goal is for your stools to appear as clear liquid. Please stop drinking 1 hour prior to your examination.
4. A sedative is used for this examination, so you will sleep for about 30 minutes afterwards. Because of the sedation you must bring someone with you to drive. The exam will be cancelled if there is no one to drive you home. Do not plan on working or driving the remainder of the day.
5. If you are diabetic, or have any lung, heart, kidney or liver disease, please notify the nurse. If you are a diabetic do not take your insulin before the exam. Please bring your insulin with you so you can take it after the procedure if needed. If you have asthma, please bring your inhaler.

Pricing for this procedure is variable depending upon what the physician finds and feels is necessary at the time. This makes giving an exact price for the procedure difficult. If you need a price for any reason we can provide an estimate.

You will be receiving two statements for the procedure, and possibly three if biopsies are taken. The first statement is from NORTHERN UTAH GASTROENTEROLOGY AND ENDOSCOPY SPECIALISTS and is for the physician’s services. The second statement is from NORTHERN UTAH ENDOSCOPY CENTER or LOGAN REGIONAL HOSPITAL and covers supplies, equipment, room charge, nursing, and technician services. If it is necessary to do biopsies during the procedure this will create a third statement. The third statement would be from a pathologist for the preparation of the biopsy and interpretation of the pathology. We appreciate your understanding and support.

Post Colonoscopy Guidelines

Do not eat until you are fully alert and awake. When alert and awake, sip a small amount of water. If you can swallow without choking in any way, you may resume your normal diet.

If you begin to pass large amounts of blood rectally, you should notify your physician immediately. Passing small amounts of blood after a biopsy has been taken is common.

After sedating medications you should not drive for the remainder of that day. You should also refrain from the use of power tools, standing on ladders, signing legal contracts, or doing anything that might injure you or someone else.

You may return to work the next day following the procedure.

Because you are medicated you will not remember the findings or the guidelines given by the physician. The directions and findings will be reviewed with the person you have arranged to drive you home. If you still have questions regarding either the treatment or findings, you should call and review this with the nurse or the physician.

You may notice gas and bloating after the procedure. This is common. Burping and passing gas should rapidly resolve increased gaseous discomfort.

If you had tissue removed (biopsy or polypectomy) you should be notified by the physician's office within about one week. If it has been longer than one week without any notification, please contact the doctor's office to get the report.

Certain conditions will require additional follow up to help assure your health and safety. Please maintain proper follow up as outlined. Notify the physician's office sooner if there are other problems or concerns.
